Profs. Aries Arugay and Jean Encinas-Franco recently published an article entitled, “The Philippines in 2024: Dueling Dynasties, Disruptive Threats” in the latest issue of Asian Survey.
The abstract reads:
In 2024, the Philippines faced multifaceted challenges that will significantly shape its sociopolitical and economic landscape in the years to come. This year-end review focuses on three important matters marking President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s second year in office. First, it discusses the failed bid by political elites to amend the 1987 Constitution, indicating that this stands to be a divisive issue unless there is grassroots support. Second, it narrates the political drama that ensued as the vaunted alliance between Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte finally crumbled, suggesting their partnership was formed solely to win the 2022 election. Finally, this review recounts the continuities and changes on the foreign policy front as the country faces relentless threats from China.
