Matthew Manuelito S. Miranda serves as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science, University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman. He is also a Consulting and Book Editor of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies for the Interdisciplinary Development Perspectives on Public Policy Book Series. He is working on a volume regarding an Introduction to Philippine Politics.
Assistant Professor M.M.S. Miranda obtained his Bachelor of Arts – Honors (magna cum laude) and Master of Arts – Honors degrees in 2017 and 2018 respectively, both in Political Science, from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He accomplished his Bachelor’s thesis wherein he conducted an exploratory research on the formulation and discursive politics behind the enactment of the 2014 Gender-Fair Ordinance of Quezon City (QCGFO). He then finished his Master’s thesis on a comparative discourse analysis of anti-discrimination ordinances in two Philippine localities: the 2014 QCGFO and the 2017 Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of the City of Baguio.
He had presented his works related to his theses and human rights policies in local and international conferences. These conferences include the following: the 2017 Sizihwan International Conference in Asia Pacific Studies in the National Sun Yat-sen University, the 2018 Human Rights Youth Camp of Amnesty International, and the 2019 Philippine Political Science Association International Conference.
He teaches social, economic, and political thought. He introduces key philosophical views of classical thinkers from ancient to contemporary eras to develop critical and creative thinking. His research interests involve the history, politics, and discourse of human rights, the intersectionality of identity, gender studies, and social constructivist research. He is also compiling a dataset regarding the content and formulation of various policies related to human rights and anti-discrimination endeavors. Through his research, he seeks to understand socially oppressed sectors to help them gain better representation and influence in society.
