
Should we imprison pregnant women?
In a new policy brief, Prof. Maria Ela L. Atienza, PhD, of the UP Department of Political Science, together with colleagues, calls attention to a critical yet often overlooked issue: the situation of pregnant women deprived of liberty in the Philippines.
With detention facilities operating at 300–400% over capacity, pregnant women face heightened risks—from inadequate prenatal care to increased exposure to disease. Despite existing protections under the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710) and the UN Bangkok Rules, imprisonment remains the default response.
